Why We Need to Stop Taking Our Phones Into the Shower

A few weeks ago, I heard a statistic that stopped me in my tracks. Apparently, we are killing our creativity simply because we have forgotten how to be bored. We no longer have time for daydreaming because we always have a phone within arm’s reach. We don’t lay in bed and let our minds wander because we are scrolling through a feed. Some people even take their phones into the shower.

The shower used to be the last "dead zone." It was the one place where you were forced to be alone with your thoughts, the steam, and maybe a stray idea about how to fix that nagging hardware issue at a client site. Now, even that sacred, quiet space is being invaded by waterproof cases and plastic baggies. We are terrified of a few minutes of mental white space, and it is costing us more than just our attention spans. It is costing us our ability to lead with vision.

The Digital Hum of the Security Industry

Working in the physical security industry means living in a world of constant data. We deal with blinking LEDs on server racks, live video feeds from high-definition cameras, and the perpetual ping of access control alerts. Our industry is built on the idea of being "always on." We sell peace of mind through constant vigilance.

However, as a leader in this space, I’ve noticed a shift. We are so focused on the technology of observation that we’ve stopped observing our own thoughts. When I talk to other women in leadership, the common denominator is often exhaustion. We feel like we have to be available at every moment, responding to every Slack message or industry update. We’ve traded our "idle time" for "input time," and the result is a creative drought.

The Site Visit That Changed My Perspective

I remember a specific site visit early in my career. I was walking through a massive logistics facility, looking at the placement of several new 4K surveillance cameras. Usually, I would have been checking my email between floors or snapping photos to upload immediately. That day, my phone battery had died.

Initially, I felt that familiar itch of anxiety. I felt disconnected. Without the digital tether, I was forced to just… walk. I looked at the way the light hit the loading docks. I noticed a small gap in the physical perimeter fence that wasn't on the original blueprints. Most importantly, my mind started to drift.

I wasn't thinking about the cameras anymore. I started thinking about the team back at the office. I realized we were approaching a project from a purely technical standpoint when the real issue was a lack of communication between the installers and the site managers. That insight didn't come from a spreadsheet or a dashboard. It came from the simple act of walking in silence.

The ROI of Being Bored

Research actually backs this up. Studies have shown a direct link between boredom and creative performance. When our brains are not occupied by external stimuli, like a phone screen, they shift into what scientists call the "default mode network." This is the state where our minds wander, daydream, and make unexpected associations.

For women executives, this mental state is where strategic thinking happens. Leadership growth for women often requires us to connect disparate pieces of information to see the bigger picture. If we are constantly filling every gap with a podcast or a social media scroll, we never give our brains the chance to do that high-level processing.

Boredom triggers variety-seeking: When we are bored, our minds look for new, different, and creative experiences.

Daydreaming supports problem-solving: Mind-wandering allows us to explore future scenarios and plan more effectively.

Reflection builds self-awareness: Idle time gives us space to think about our motives and behaviors, which is a key trait of successful female leadership development.

We often view boredom as a negative, but in the context of personal development for women leaders, it is a competitive advantage. The leader who can sit in silence and think through a complex problem will always outperform the leader who is merely reacting to the latest notification.

Reclaiming Your Mental White Space

The physical security world will always be busy. There will always be a new camera to test, a new cloud-based access system to evaluate, and a new threat to mitigate. But your leadership depends on your ability to step away from the hardware and into your own head.

We need to stop treating our phones like a required fifth limb. Every time you reach for your phone while waiting for a meeting to start or standing in line for coffee, you are opting out of a potential "lightbulb moment." You are choosing a quick hit of dopamine over a long-term breakthrough.

Women in the C-suite often feel the pressure to be the most productive person in the room. We equate "busy" with "valuable." Real value, especially in a technical field like ours, comes from the ability to see what others miss. You can’t see the gaps in a security plan if your eyes are glued to a five-inch screen.

A Challenge for the Week Ahead

I want you to try something. It’s simple, but it will feel incredibly difficult at first. Leave your phone in another room for thirty minutes a day. Don't replace it with a book or a laptop. Just sit. Or walk. Or, yes, take a shower without a soundtrack.

Observe where your mind goes. You might find yourself thinking about a difficult conversation you need to have with a direct report. You might suddenly realize how to better integrate a client’s existing hardware with a new software platform. Or you might just daydream about your next vacation.

All of it is valuable. All of it is part of the process of becoming a more present, more creative leader. Leadership traits for women aren't just about how we communicate with others; they are about how we communicate with ourselves.

The next time you feel that urge to reach for your phone during a quiet moment, resist it. Embrace the boredom. Let your mind wander. You might just find that your best ideas are waiting for you in the silence.

Stay Visible. Keep Leading.

{"@type":"BlogPosting","image":["https://cdn.marblism.com/8_Is7aCaU9N.webp","https://cdn.marblism.com/gsx-expo-badge-you-are-here-map-black-shoes.jpg","https://cdn.marblism.com/7OlJvQ-1QPc.webp","https://cdn.marblism.com/HsM01fvCRgU.jpg","https://cdn.marblism.com/uYABmqa6Mvt.webp","https://cdn.marblism.com/7Z53mtuhXgy.webp"],"author":{"url":"https://linkedin.com/in/megawatt","name":"Meg Watt","@type":"Person","jobTitle":"Director of Marketing and Communications"},"@context":"https://schema.org","headline":"Is Daydreaming Dead?
